Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary, also known as the Migratory Bird Sanctuary, is located on a number of islands in the middle of the Kadalundi River on the border of Kozhikode and Malappuram districts.
The sanctuary is spread over small islets at the confluence of the Kadalundi River and the Arabian Sea. It is home to more than 100 native bird species and more than 60 species of migratory birds that fly from Central Asia and Europe.
The view of the mangrove forest bird sanctuary from the nearby railway bridge is indescribably beautiful. The awe-inspiring feast of flocks of birds flying in unison while listening to the sound of trains calling for cookies across the bridge is a delight.
For those who want to go bird watching through the dense green mangrove forests, there are eight boats that are traditionally set up in service.
The boat journey starts from under the Kadalundi railway bridge and ends at the small islands between the Kadalundi Vallikkunnu panchayats. There are about half a dozen small islands full of coconut trees. They also serve sea and river fish dishes with local delicacies as per the requirements of the tourists.
In the evening, when you reach the shores of Kadalundi, you can enjoy the beautiful view of the setting sun melting into the Arabian Sea, and the music of the waves setting on the rocks on the other side of the bridge will delight the ears in the glow of the setting sun.
Migratory birds can be seen in large numbers in Kadalundi from October to March.
