NATURAL CAVE KOOVAPARA – From the History to Present
Koovapara cave is a natural wonder in Kasaragod district of Kerala. It is located in the West
Eleri GramaPanchayat of Kasaragod district. It is one among the largest caves of Kerala.
Years ago a group of people migrated to Koovapara in Bheemanady from Nileswar with the aim
of doing Punam cultivation in the hilly areas. During that period there were no ponds or water
sources for carrying out cultivation. At that time they used earthern pots to collect water from
this cave. They used this water for agriculture, for rearing animals and for their own purposes.
Later on, the places where they done Punam cultivation was came under separate ownership. NATURAL CAVE KOOVAPARA KASARAGOD TOURISAM
With the Land Reform Act of 1960-70 they got tenancy right over the plots of land. At that time
K. Kunhambu, who was residing at Kuruncherry, the nearby village of Koovapara bought 4 acre
of land in which this cave also included. In 1984 he used water pump to pump water from cave

for the cultivation. Later on, when the transportation facilities get improved many people started
to visit the cave. With the modification of Kuruncherry- Koovapara- Chembankunnu block road
people from distant places also arrived here to visit the wonder of nature. The renovation of the
cave started on January 1st 2018 with the help and support of BRDC & KTDC. The first stage of
modification was started with the walling of the plot of land for ensuring safety. An entry point
has also made for it and opened for both the domestic and international tourists. Many of the
