Kanthara What is it ?
Some people have asked what does Kanthara mean ? Well, the story happens in and around villages bordering on the forests in the valleys of Western Ghats somewhere between Kundapura and Udupi in South Karnataka. Kanthara in local fables means a “mysterious forest”. The word originates from Kandara (ಕಂದರ) which means a valley between hills.
Forests within the valleys always fascinate people from the edges. They are rich, inviting, scary, ferocious, gorgeous and mysterious. Hence that unique name Kanthara. Now, the title has been designed with a lot of imagination. The “o” between ಕಾ and ತಾ is in the shape of a “Gaggare”, the anklet used in the “Kola” by those who play “Daiva” or “Bhoota”. That “Gaggare” has enormous importance in Tulunadu culture.
I reiterate, Kanthara is a movie firmly rooted in the rich Sanatana culture of Tulunadu. Now some work for your eyes. Enlarge the photograph and see in the middle of that anklet “o” in the title of ಕಾಂತಾರ.
Kantara (Kannada pronunciation transl. ”Mystical Forest”) is a 2022 Indian Kannada-language action thriller film written and directed by Rishab Shetty, and produced by Vijay Kiragandur, under Hombale Films.
